Dehradun: It is not all the time that twins share the same passion. Tashi and Nungshi Malik, residents of Sinola in Dehradun have successfully become the first set of twins to scale the highest peak in the world- Mt Everest. Daughters of a former Army officer, the girls scaled the peak at 7:30 am on Sunday.

"Dad! We did it!" they called their father Colonel (Retired) Virender Malik in Dehradun to announce their feat. The sisters always took a keen interest in climbing, mountaineering, rafting and other adventure sports since their days at school. However, once they had their eyes set on Everest it took a lot of preparation, courses etc to be able to give the highest peak a shot.

Initially, the girls’ mother was not keen on her daughters attempting this mighty climb. It took some convincing, but once it was done there was no looking back for the twins. The twins have done their parents, their school and the entire state of Uttarakhand proud by achieving this next to impossible feat at such a young age. Congratulations and felicitations have been pouring in from all quarters since the news of their successful climb spread in the capital city.

Both Nungshi and Tashi did their school education from Guru Nanak Fifth Centenary School, Mussoorie, and stood as avid participants to sports and adventure activities in the school. After passing their class XII examinations, love for mountaineering made them go for Basic Mountaineering Course at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), Uttarkashi, which was completed in 2010. They did not stop here and went on to successfully undertaken Advance Mountaineering Course from the NIM in 2011. The two had also successfully undergone training from a professional mountaineering trainer and instructor at the NIM with A Grade. They later also completed basic skiing course at the Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering, Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, and stood overall second collectively in the course thereby obtaining ‘A’ grade. Their biggest achievement came in the form of successfully scaling Mt Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, in Africa, in February 2012 and this inspired them to scale Mount Everest.
