Dehradun: The city’s iconic landmark Clock Tower is finally ticking again. After remaining defunct for a long time, the concerned authorities at PWD finally woke up from slumber on Sunday morning to get the tower’s six clocks to function again.
The historical building stands tall right in the center of the city. Dehradun’s Clock Tower was a collaborative effort of the Dehradun Nagar Pallika, Lala Sher Singh and Lala Anand Singh, leading businessmen of their times and was named after one of their ancestors who was also an honorary magistrate in his days.
The foundation stone was laid on July 2, 1948, by the then Governor of UP, Sarojini Naidu. The Clock Tower was completed in 1953 and was inaugurated by Lal Bahadur Shastri. It has a hexagonal architecture lending it heritage value. It is the largest non-chiming six-faced clock today.
The tower has undergone beautification on several occasions, especially when Dehradun was declared the provisional state capital. However due to lack of regular maintenance of the clocks and the tower itself it’s been an eyesore for many Doonites.
